Clustering of advected passive sliders on a fluctuating surface

چکیده
We study the clustering properties of advected, noninteracting, passive scalar particles in a Burgers fluid with noise, a problem which maps to that of passive sliding particles moving under gravity on a surface evolving through the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. Numerical simulations show that both the density-density correlation function and the single-site mass distribution scale with system size. The scaling functions diverge at small argument, indicating strong clustering of particles. We analytically evaluate the scaling functions for the two-point correlation and mass distribution of noninteracting particles in thermal equilibrium in a random landscape, and find that the results are remarkably similar to those for nonequilibrium advection. Dynamics of fluctuation-dominated phase ordering: hard-core passive sliders on a fluctuating surface.
We study the dynamics of a system of hard-core particles sliding downwards on a one-dimensional fluctuating interface, which in a special case can be mapped to the problem of a passive scalar advected by a Burgers fluid. Driven by the surface fluctuations, the particles show a tendency to cluster, but the hard-core interaction prevents collapse. We use numerical simulations to measure the autoc...

متن کاملSubgrid particle resolution for the turbulent transport of a passive scalar
The transport of passive scalar in turbulent flows remains a challenging and important problem for several reasons. First, the passive scalar spectra exhibit various behaviors depending on the molecular Schmidt number value (see [3]). The passive scalar spectrum with a high Schmidt number exhibits thus a k−1 scaling between the Kolmogorov scale and the Batchelor scale [1]. This suggests that it...

We show that the renormalization group flows of the massless superstring modes in the presence of fluctuating D-branes satisfy the equations of fluid dynamics. In particular, we show that the D-brane’s U(1) field is related to the velocity function in the Navier-Stokes equation while the dilaton plays the role of the passive scalar advected by the turbulent liquid. This leads us to suggest a po...
متن کاملA Simple Passive Scalar Advection-Diffusion Model
This paper presents a simple, one-dimensional model of a randomly advected passive scalar. The model exhibits anomalous inertial range scaling for the structure functions constructed from scalar differences. The model provides a simple computational test for recent ideas regarding closure and scaling for randomly advected passive scalars. Results suggest that high order structure function scali...
